Passenger vehicles witness record sales in July

As many as 342,300 passenger vehicles were sold in July, as per industry estimates, an increase of 16% from a year earlier when manufacturers dispatched 295,000 units to dealerships. Prior to this, passenger vehicles sales had peaked at 334,000 units in October 2020.

Satish Sharma, President (Asia Pacific, Middle East and Africa), Apollo Tyres, told ET that adoption of electric vehicles (EV) is expected to gather pace over the next few years. Accordingly, the company is gearing up to cater to demand both in passenger vehicle and two-wheeler segments.

The just-launched Brezza, and yet-to-be-launched Grand Vitara, have boosted Maruti’s booking charts. Shashank Srivastava, senior executive director, Maruti Suzuki, told ET that going by vehicle buying trends globally, SUVs should comprise half of the passenger vehicle market in India.

According to government and stock exchange data reviewed by ET, the government has pumped in ₹27,000 crore into IDBI Bank between April 1, 2010 and March 31, 2021. Data show the government acquired 4.5 billion shares in IDBI Bank during this 11-year period. This brings its weighted average cost of acquisition to ₹60 a share.

Vi and Airtel’s net debt stood at Rs 1.96 lakh crore and Rs 1.6 lakh crore respectively in the quarter ended March, FY22, while Jio’s net debt was at lower Rs 57,700 crore in the June quarter, FY23. Airtel and Vi are yet to report fiscal first quarter earnings.

The stocks went ex-dividend on Friday.
