Gold prices edged higher on Monday as signs of cooling U.S. inflation lifted hopes for interest rate cuts from the Federal Reserve this year, while traders awaited a slew of U.S. economic data due this week.

Multiple stocks listed on the NYSE such as Berkshire Hathaway, Chipotle Mexican Grill and Barrick Gold were halted for volatility.

GameStop shares surged more than 70% premarket on Monday after "Roaring Kitty" Keith Gill, the stocks influencer behind the 2021 retail trading frenzy, returned to Reddit with a post showing a $116 million bet on the embattled videogame retailer.

Yield on the 10-year benchmark government ended the day’s trade at 6.9438%, its lowest closing level since April 7, 2022, LSEG data showed.

Short covering signals a shift in view on security from extreme bearishness to bullishness.

The Nifty IT index closed 0.39 per cent up at 32511.4.

While the S&P BSE Sensex hit a lifetime high of 76,738.89 before closing the session at 76,308.80, up 2,507 pts or 3.17%, the broader Nifty scaled a fresh lifetime high of 23,338.70.

​"A meeting of the Board of Directors is scheduled to be held on June 6 to consider raising of funds by way of issuance of equity shares and/or any other eligible securities through permissible modes, including but not limited to a private placement, a qualified institutions placement, preferential issue, or any other method or combination of methods," the company said in a filing.

The 30-share BSE benchmark Sensex advanced 2,507 points or 3.4% to settle at 76,469. The broader NSE Nifty gained 733 points or 3.25% to end at 23,264. All major sectors settled in the green with financials climbing 4% to a record high, while public sector banks surged 8.4%. Nifty Oil & Gas also gained about 6.8% and Nifty Realty surged nearly 6%.
