Inflation measured by the consumer price index (CPI) eased to 6.7% in July, from 7% in June, but was primarily led by volatile components such as vegetables, edible oil, gold, silver, petrol and diesel.

The S&P 500 opened lower by 10.78 points, or 0.25%, at 4,269.37, while the Nasdaq Composite dropped 50.56 points, or 0.39%, to 12,996.63 at the opening bell.

Brent crude futures fell $3.49, or 3.56%, to $94.66 a barrel by 0945 GMT after settling 1.5% lower on Friday. U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude was down $3.32, or 3.61% at $88.77, after a 2.4% drop in the previous session.
