Both indices slumped as much as 3.25% in the last 30 minutes of trading but rebounded slightly after the Nifty hit 16,800, which has been a crucial support for the index in recent weeks. A fall below 16,800 could result in the index declining by as much as 5% in the near term, said analysts.

Gold prices edged higher on Tuesday towards a three-month peak touched in the previous session, as heightened tensions between Russia and the West over Ukraine prompted investors to pull back from riskier assets and opt for safe-haven bullion.

The interim dividend outgo was around Rs 5,546 crore and the government was the largest beneficiary as it received approximately Rs 3,667 crore for its over 66 per cent stake in the coal behemoth. Other categories of investors had the remaining share.

Deloitte India, which is doing an external review on the matter, is likely to submit its report in a week’s time, two people familiar with the issue said.
