Legendary investment guru Jim Slater believed growth shares are the most rewarding investments, with unlimited upside if the right companies are picked. Slater said investors should specialise in a certain aspect of investing and concentrate their efforts so that they are able to exploit trading opportunities that elude the average investor.

"That is where we see a lot of retail interest and because a derivative trading can also happen in a volatile and sideways market, we see that the turnover will sustain and even grow in the coming quarters. So overall I feel that there is a sustained behaviour or interest of retail investors both on the investment and trading sides," says Prakarsh Gagdani, CEO, 5paisa.com.

Tata Power net profit up 31% at Rs 632 cr

Tata Power has reported an over 31% rise in its consolidated net profit to ₹632.37 crore in the March 2022 quarter, mainly on the back of higher revenues. Its consolidated net profit was ₹481.21 crore in the year-ago quarter, according to a statement.

The US dollar index slumped immediately post the US Fed decision but witnessed a sharp rebound and tested fresh 2002 highs just the next day. Similarly, gold bounced back to near $1910/oz level in reaction to the US Fed decision before sliding back close to $1880/oz level.

With the Reserve Bank of India, the US Federal Reserve and the Bank of England all hiking interest rates in the space of two days, benchmark domestic stock indices have suffered a meltdown with investors losing a mind-boggling Rs 11.8 lakh crores based on market capitalisation of BSE listed firms.

​​While there has been some variation in returns during specific event occurrences, the long-term returns have been similar – around 603% for Nifty whereas 620% for gold. However, as gold has been underperforming since past year and a half, the return differential has widened sharply and is at about 174% as of April end. If the theory does hold good, then from where we stand now the odds are stacked in favour of gold catching up.
