The 30-share pack Sensex rose 533.15 points or 0.88 per cent to close at 61,150.04. Its broader peer NSE Nifty50 climbed 156.60 points or 0.87 per cent to 18,212.35. Both indices are closer to their all-time high levels.

The bonds will be allotted to certain eligible investors permitted to invest in NCDs under the applicable laws, it added.

"Defence will continue to be a theme for India as we try and bolster our military prowess, and the difference with the past is that there is a greater focus on indigenisation. So, India will want to make a lot of its defence equipment at home, and there will be big winners out of that."

The Nifty IT index closed 0.0 per cent at 38604.75.
